Shipping costs are rarely one number. Freight, handling, duties, storage and delays all add up, and the biggest savings often come from planning rather than from negotiating a lower rate.
1. Consolidate where you can
Combining smaller orders into fewer shipments reduces per-unit freight and paperwork. Consolidated services let smaller volumes benefit from container-level rates.
2. Book early and forecast
Last-minute bookings cost more and offer fewer options. Sharing a rolling forecast with your freight partner secures space and better rates during peak season.
3. Pack for the journey
Right-sized, well-packed cargo uses less space and suffers less damage. Chargeable weight in air freight depends on volume as much as weight, so packaging matters.
4. Get documents right first time
Errors in paperwork cause demurrage, storage and re-filing fees. A short internal checklist prevents most of them.
5. Review routes and modes regularly
The cheapest route last year may not be the cheapest today. Review lanes, carriers and modes at least twice a year.
Small process changes compound. Start with one or two of these and measure the difference over a quarter.
