What Is an Importer Exporter Code (IEC)? How to Apply Online

The IEC is a 10 digit code every Indian importer and exporter needs. Learn what it is, the documents required, how to apply online, check it and keep it active.

Before you ship a single carton across the border, you need one registration. Without it, customs will not process your import or export, and your bank may not release foreign payments. That registration is the Importer Exporter Code, or IEC.

This guide explains what the IEC is, who needs it, the documents required, how to apply online, how to check an IEC and the yearly update that keeps it active.

What is an IEC code?

IEC stands for Importer Exporter Code. It is a 10 digit alphanumeric code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), which works under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It is also called the Import Export Code.

The IEC acts as your business identity for foreign trade. It appears on your shipping bills and bills of entry, and customs, banks and the DGFT use it to identify you. One IEC is issued per PAN, and it is valid for life as long as you keep it updated.

Who needs an IEC?

  • Any business or individual importing goods into India or exporting goods from India for commercial purposes
  • Companies, partnerships, proprietors, LLPs, trusts and societies
  • Exporters who want to claim export incentives from the DGFT and customs

Some cases do not need one. Imports or exports for personal use, and trade by government departments and notified charitable institutions, are among the exemptions. If you are unsure, check with your customs broker or the DGFT. Our guide to the import-export process in India shows where the IEC fits at the start of the journey.

IEC details: what the code contains

Your IEC profile records:

  • Name and legal status of the business
  • PAN
  • Registered address and branch details
  • Bank account details
  • Directors, partners or proprietor details
  • The IEC number and date of issue

Customs uses the IEC details on every filing, so any mismatch with your PAN, GST or bank records can cause a query.

Documents required for IEC

Keep these ready before you start:

  • PAN of the business or individual
  • Address proof for the business premises, such as an electricity bill, rent agreement or property papers
  • Bank proof, such as a cancelled cheque or a bank certificate with the account number and IFSC code
  • Digital photograph of the applicant or authorised person
  • Email address and mobile number for verification
  • Digital signature certificate or Aadhaar e-sign to authenticate the application

Files are uploaded in PDF or JPEG format within the size limits shown on the DGFT portal. GST registration is not a condition for applying, though most businesses have one.

How to apply for an IEC code online

The application is made on the DGFT portal. A typical sequence is:

  1. Register on the DGFT portal. Create an account with your PAN, email and mobile number, and verify with OTPs.
  2. Log in and open the IEC services. Choose the option to apply for an IEC.
  3. Fill in the application form. Enter the business name, address, entity type and bank details as they appear in your records.
  4. Upload documents. Attach the files listed above.
  5. Pay the fee. The government fee is ₹500 and is not refundable. Confirm the current amount on the portal. You can pay by net banking, card or UPI.
  6. Sign and submit. Authenticate with your digital signature or Aadhaar e-sign.
  7. Note the application number. You receive an application reference number to track progress.

Applications are generally processed within a few working days, and sometimes sooner when documents are correct. Once approved, the IEC certificate is issued electronically and can be downloaded from the portal.

How to check an IEC code

You can verify an IEC in two common ways:

  • On the DGFT portal. Use the IEC profile services to view or print an IEC and see its status.
  • On ICEGATE. The customs portal has an option to check the status of an IE Code, where you enter the number and a captcha. A new IEC may take a few days to appear on ICEGATE, so contact the DGFT if it does not show after that. Our guide to ICEGATE explains how the portal works.

Check a supplier's or customer's IEC this way before you do business, especially for a first export order.

Annual IEC update

The IEC is valid for life, but the DGFT requires holders to confirm or update their details every financial year. The update window runs from April to June. If you miss it, the IEC can be deactivated until you complete the update, and that can stop your filings at the port.

To update, log in to the DGFT portal, open the IEC profile management section, choose the update option, review your details and authenticate. Do this even if nothing has changed.

Changing or correcting IEC details

If your address, bank account or partners change, update the IEC on the DGFT portal. Keep the IEC in line with your PAN, GST and bank records at all times. Mismatches cause problems when you register on ICEGATE, file customs documents or claim refunds.

Common IEC mistakes

  • Name or address that differs from PAN or bank records
  • Skipping the annual update
  • Applying with an expired or invalid digital signature
  • Using a personal address for a business IEC
  • Forgetting to update the IEC after a bank change
  • Assuming an IEC replaces other licences. Some goods still need separate permits or approvals.
